ABSTRACT

In this joint autoethnography (Allen-Collinson, 2013; Bochner & Ellis, 1995), we explore our othered experiences as academics, originally from the United States and the United Kingdom, who have each spent more than 15 years living in Japan. Reluctant to embrace the label “outsiders,” we position ourselves on the periphery of academia geographically (Canagarajah, 1996), working in the marginalized field of language education within the academy (Turner, 2011) and in our adopted country, Japan, as part of the linguistic and ethnic minority.
