ABSTRACT
Polybenzimidazole (PBI) fiber and polymer have been commercially available since 1983. The unique high temperature, nonmelting, nonburning and high moisture regain properties have stimulated a strong focus on the use of PBI fiber in personal fire and flame protection. PBI fiber properties, fire hazards, and resultant applications are reviewed. Some potential applications for PBI in other than fiber form are also noted.
