The great majority of patients with viral infections are not treated in hospitals, but from start to finish by general practitioners. Therefore, any drugs that are developed for prophylactic or therapeutic use against human viral diseases will have to be studied either in general practice or under comparable conditions, for example, in schools, factories, or the armed services.
