Control of Coccidiosis in Chickens: Immunization with Live Vaccines
WithMartin W. Shirley, Peter L. Long
Pages 22

Although anticoccidial drugs, virtually exclusively, are used for the control of coccidiosis in chickens, the development of safe live vaccines as a further option is now a topic of research in several laboratories worldwide. This interest is reflected in an increase in relevant patent applications (Table 1). For reasons of industrial secrecy, it is difficult to assess just how much progress is being made towards the goal, both of live vaccines and those produced by recombinant DNA technologies. Nevertheless, the practical application of live vaccines should occur much sooner than molecular vaccines, which still remain a long-term prospect.
