ABSTRACT

Transgenic (Bt) sweet com varieties offer an economically viable option for farmers. Consumer acceptability must be tested prior to large scale production. During filed experiments conducted in 1999, harvested com ears were graded according to the USDA Standards for Grades and revenue projections were developed for marketable volume of ears. Consumer tests suggest that the Bt varieties were preferred when viewed in husk, but the differences were smaller after dehusking. Sensory evaluations for both types of sweet com, Bt and non-Bt varieties, were nearly identical.
