ABSTRACT

A retrospective look at the gigantic apparition of Gauss, towering over the level plain, can help us in our search for orientation among the conflicts that threaten the course of scientific development, present and future. The enormous contribution of Gauss to the insight and artistry of science has been absorbed only very gradually into the mainstream of developments. The boy made a favorable impression on the Duke, who from then until his death in 1806 assumed all financial burdens for Gauss’ further education and his later existence as an independent scholar. The world in which Gauss grew up was untouched by this development. One might wonder what would have become of that gifted child if good fortune had not brought him to the attention of a powerful patron. Gauss never participated in the task of stimulating the younger generation, either through direct influence as a teacher or in personal contact.
