ABSTRACT

In reports on onion bulb dormancy the workers seemed generally to follow the latter definition of Emilson but the use of the terms rest and dormancy is very complicated and sometimes confusing. Aoba, T. made a morphological study of bulb formation in onion. Onions grew foliage leaves then began to form bulbs with the thickening of the sheath bases under long days. Inside growing bulbs bladeless leaves were formed and these also thickened. Regarding dormancy of onion bulbs, Abdalla, A. A. and Mann, L. K. and Mann and Lewis were sceptical about the concept of a qualitatively stable rest period. Based on their results in garlic and onion, they proposed the idea that dormancy gradually diminishes during storage. Wright et al. stored bulbs under low, intermediate, and high humidities and found higher rates of rooting with higher humidity, but no clear relationship between temperature in the range of 0 to 10°C and rooting.
