ABSTRACT

In materials processing industries, the ingredients as well as some of the products usually exist in three different forms; namely, gaseous form, liquid form, and powder form. Materials in these forms interface with each other during physical transformation, chemical reaction, and mechanical handling. Image processing and recognition has been a subject of intensive study during the past 15 years. It offers a variety of applications, including particle morphology studies. The main function of the object isolation system is to single out the desired objects from the picture for identification and recognition. Object isolation may be accomplished by thresholding, contour finding, edge detection, picture segmentation, and texture analysis. The problem of pattern recognition and classification may be treated as one of discriminating the input data, not between individual patterns but between pattern classes, via the search for features or attributes among members of a class.
