ABSTRACT

No-till is the ultimate in conservation tillage. Conservation tillage, in particular no-till, can be and often is an emotion-laden topic. Conservation tillage appears to be our first chance in 50 years to have a long run solution to the sheet erosion problem; but it is not a panacea for all erosion problems, it is another tool, a powerful tool. Leadership can be a disguise for guarding of turf or prerogatives. The partnership of leaders must be exercised continually at the interstate, state, regional, and county levels. Agriculture scientists recognize that the implications and complexities associated with conservation tillage create a job too big and important for any one group, organization, or agency to handle alone or at one organizational level. The introduction of plant growth regulators made no-tillage a possibility. Some success with no-till techniques was reported in the 1950s with the development of herbicides to control sod, grasses, and weeds.
