ABSTRACT

Researchers found that residues, combined with contouring and terracing could give almost 100 percent control of wind and water erosion instead of 50 or 75 percent that was experienced with contouring or terracing alone. Residue in the valleys prevent both wind and water erosion and prevent water from running to low spots that are normally too wet. In many cases, ridges on the contour make costly terraces unnecessary. A terrace every 76 cm has got to be better than a terrace every 61 or 91 m. If the hillsides are very steep and irregular there is a possibility that terraces may be needed also, but when they are used, they won't fill up with silt and are much easier to maintain. The ridges are made at cultivating time in midsummer, then just leave them be. The problems of "conventional" farming are numerous and difficult to solve.
