100One of the thoroughly studied aspects of insect physiology is the effect of temperature on growth, development, and metamorphosis. In the optimal temperature environment most insect larvae develop at a fairly constant, species-specific rate, but adverse temperature conditions can affect both the number of molts and the length of consecutive instars. With increase of temperature, rate of growth and metabolism increase concomitantly. 1 , 2
