ABSTRACT

Norman Childers and associates believe that most arthritis is due to eating members of the nightshade family, the Solanaceae, because of a more or less toxic substance, solanine, these plants contain. There is no longer any question that arthritis is closely linked to the immunological system through the histocompatibility gene complex, i.e., the human leukocyte antigen. On reading Marshall Mandell and Theron Randolph and their associates it is easy to be reminded of the old "snake oil" and other panaceas, so many are the forms of arthritis and various other diseases that are blamed on food hypersensitivities, especially allergies. The Mandell and the associated Conte and Girsh group and the Randolph group have reported very encouraging results. There is at present a number of promising research programs on arthritis such as the Newcombe et al. project on an analysis of the inflammatory process.
