Cultures occasionally contain areas in which the cells show nuclear pyknosis or chromatin clumping, with degeneration of the cytoplasm (Figure 5). * These changes may be due to bacteria that are incompletely suppressed by antibiotics in the nutrient medium, and they are sufficiently distinctive to be differentiated from virus-induced injury.
