ABSTRACT
This paper considers one particular medium of Romanesque art, slab relief sculpture, by focussing on the Portal of the Lamb at San Isidoro in León. Through this case study it considers several aspects of process: an ‘umbrella’ level of direction from the papacy, the involvement of multiple ‘patrons’, the use of Roman sarcophagi as archetypes and the agency of artists.
