ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the extent of the existing and potential Russian influence in Slovakia by analyzing, in particular, the energy and the defense sectors. The author argues that while gas and oil imports from Russia constitutes a platform for certain influence, it is mainly through the nuclear energy sector and in particular through the construction of two new units at Mochovce NPP that Russia can exert some influence. Possibilities to influence developments in Slovakia through the defense sector are limited, compared to the energy sector. The existence of Russian-origin equipment in the Slovak army and the general opacity of the army procurement procedures, however, provide ground for some influence. The author further argues that while the general Slovak economy is dominated by multi-national companies and export almost fully oriented toward the EU markets, Russia is able to pursue its agenda through domestic oligarchs and through exploring its cultural proximity and propaganda.
