ABSTRACT

This chapter presents reactions to injury case of Adrian Jones, a freshman collegiate football player. The chapter outlines Adrian’s case, details of his grade II lateral ankle sprain and discusses the role personality, history of stressors, and coping skills play in influencing his psychological responses to injury. These factors are further explained using the integrated model of psychological response to sport injury and rehabilitation (Wiese-Bjornstal, Smith, Shaffer, & Morrey, 1998), with a particular focus on the role of pre-injury factors in post-injury psychological responses. Using this information an interprofessonal care plan is developed utilizing the perspectives of a certified mental performance consultant, an athletic trainer, and a strength and conditioning coach. The chapter also discusses ethical considerations and needs for referral, and provides an update of Adrian’s progress five months later.
