ABSTRACT

This chapter presents reactions to rehabilitation case of Jamiee Jacobsen (“JJ”), a 20-year-old female collegiate volleyball player, who suffered an Achilles tendon rupture during a mid-season game in her junior year. The chapter outlines JJ’s reported history of body image concerns, details of her injury and discusses how her body pressures, coupled with high levels of perfectionism, a strong athletic identity, and a high-performance athletic environment, interact to influence her injury rehabilitation journey. These factors are further explained through the Integrated Model of Response to Sport Injury (Weise-Bjornstal, Smith, Shaffer, & Morrey, 1998). An interprofessional care plan is developed and considerations for effective treatment are offered from the perspectives of an athletic trainer, a sport psychology consultant, and a sports dietitian. The chapter concludes with a review of key ethical considerations involved in the principled care of athletes facing similar challenges and an update of JJ’s progress one year later.
