ABSTRACT

This chapter presents reactions to rehabilitation case of Brandon Jackson, a freshman music performance major. The chapter presents his case, details of the rotator cuff tendonitis injury he sustained, and discusses the role of cognitive and somatic anxiety, re-injury anxiety, and rehabilitation adherence in Brandon’s injury rehabilitation and recovery process. Brandon’s reactions are explained through the sport anxiety model (Smith & Smoll, 1990), and an interprofessional care plan is developed. The case is then evaluated from the perspective of those involved: a licensed psychologist, an athletic trainer, and a clarinet professor. The chapter also discusses ethical considerations, needs for referral, and provides an update of Brandon’s progress two months later.
