ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author describes the evolution of his team's work with couples and illustrates several examples with verbatim excerpts from sessions. Sweden is probably unique in the sense that couple counseling for all kinds of client constellations is mandatory by law. All communities/local governments must offer access to affordable couple counseling to all citizens. The author and his colleague Bertil Ekstedt have a long tradition of individual therapy models dominating in Sweden. The Swedish Board of Health supports these models and is unsupportive of family therapy and some brief therapy models. The author and his colleague started as a pilot project in 2011 with Talmon's model: telephone interview before session, session, and telephone follow-up two months after the session. The Session Rating Scale is a brief alliance scale used to get information and feedback from clients about what they experienced in the sessions.
