ABSTRACT

This chapter describes training methods, key knowledge and competencies, and specific clinical skills that are taught at the KW Counseling Service (KWCS) in Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. For more than half a century KWCS has been offering training and hands-on experience to emerging therapists. The Walk-In Counselling Clinic is a key part of this training and often a favorite part of their practicum for the graduate students. KWCS is a multi-service, multi-funded, non-profit family counseling agency in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. KWCS has a long history of providing training, internships, and externships to counseling professionals. Clients attending the Walk-In Clinic at KWCS first have a fifteen-minute meeting with an intake worker, who will perform a variety of functions: ensuring that the client understands what single-session counseling is and help them access another service if that is not what they are seeking; gathering demographic and clinical data; and so on.
