ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author offers observations on the history, methodologies, possible abuses, and future promises of Single-Session Therapy (SST). SST, provided in a walk-in clinic, or by appointment, or in some other situation, has been helpful with a wide variety of problems—including anxiety, medical problems, depression, eating disorders, and substance abuse, as well as various relationship issues. There are three common themes that cut across and underlie different effective SSTs—mindset, time, and client empowerment. Mindset has to do with hope and expectation, the belief that one session can be sufficient, that the client has the capacity to make a significant change in the moment. Client empowerment entails having a truly respectful attitude and an awareness, to use one of the golf metaphors, that clinicians are the caddie and not the player—their primary job is to hand the client one of their clubs and maybe proffers some advice and encouragement.
