ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses how working within the client's cultural context is critical in conducting Single-Session Therapy (SST). The clients are surprised to hear that to solve their problems they have to come to therapy for many sessions, perhaps for many months. These are just some of the instances where a SST approach might be quite useful. However, as is true with psychotherapy as a whole, the therapist working within a SST model also must work within the client's cultural context or framework. The chapter focuses on specifically on working with Asian-American clients—although the general principle of attending to cultural context is applicable across various groups. In fact, many people who come from a collectivist culture are much more likely to value interdependence as opposed to independence. An effective therapeutic approach must be able to consider the client's cultural context.
