ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses results from an intervention in Australian schools designed to educate young people about human papillomavirus (HPV) and HPV vaccination, and improve vaccination experiences. Despite media campaigns, adolescents’ understanding, self-efficacy, and involvement in decision-making regarding HPV vaccination are low, and their fear and anxiety are high. This chapter outlines the design, implementation, and evaluation of tools from our health intervention that addressed this desire for knowledge and fear of needles: an HPV vaccination app and website with education and distraction components, and a biofeedback-controlled interactive art app that combines relaxation training with multimedia distraction, called ‘BrightHearts’.
