ABSTRACT

Deterrence theory has been a staple in theoretical, empirical, and policy-related research in criminology. One of the field’s leading contributors to this line of research has been Ray Paternoster. This chapter situates Paternoster’s contributions to this line of research within the context of his professional (and personal) experiences. In so doing, it traces how Ray used his early training to help steer the course of deterrence scholarship throughout his professional career and, in turn, the careers of those students he mentored along the way.
