Weeds have long been recognized as a source of considerable economic loss in agriculture. Weeds cause not only crop yield losses due to competition for resources (i.e. light, water or mineral nutrients) but also a reduction in crop quality and harvesting efficiency (Zimdahl, 2004). Moreover, weeds may also host pests and pathogens that can be detrimental to the health of the crop (Wisler and Norris, 2005).
