ABSTRACT

The efficiency of the CE concept to prevent intestinal colonization of Salmonella in dayold chickens has been verified in numerous experimental studies (reviewed by Pivnick and Nurmi, 1982; Schleifer, 1985; Mead and Impey, 1986; Stavric and D’Aoust, 1993; Mead, 2000; Revolledo et al., 2006; Schneitz and Mead, 2010). The chicken assay included application of the treatment material to newly hatched chickens, followed by a marked challenge strain of Salmonella a few days later. After a certain period of time, the experiment was terminated and the birds were euthanized and tested for the challenge organism, primarily in the GI tract.
