ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the social actors taking part in the debate surrounding offensive entertainment content. It addresses the notion of media accountability in the context of entertainment content, by defining the idea of accountable popular culture, and focuses on the various ways in which it is constructed. The chapter discusses a future model for evaluating processes of constructing an accountable popular culture in a society. There are two tracks for constructing media accountability or an accountable popular culture: the liability track and the answerability track. An analysis of decisions made in both tracks concerning perceived offensive entertainment content in a society can shed light on the boundaries of its accountable popular culture. Media accountability processes can be explored in relation to news as well as entertainment content, but most studies focus on journalistic misconduct, with only a few exploring entertainment content.
