ABSTRACT

Festivals that had a major impact on popularizing the national song in Poland had appeared by the 1960s. Among events from this period was the Sopot International Song Festival, which first took place in the year 1961 and the National Festival of Polish Song in Opole (NFPS) which appeared in 1963. In contrast to the Sopot event, NFPS was aimed at popularizing Polish songs. The NFPS in Opole had a major impact on promoting Polish popular music. This essay portrays the evolution of the careers of six female singers who performed at the NFPS. The choice here is not random, and each artist mentioned has a place in the history of Polish popular music. Their stories serve as the framework for discussing the evolution of the NFPS in Opole.
