ABSTRACT

Poland is a country where punk music and the subculture that grew up around it have been present since around 1977, arriving primarily from England, producing an array of attitudes, scenes, and local legends. In this brief chapter-length introduction to Polish punk, I wanted to touch upon the oeuvre of a few significant Polish bands that are representative of particular streams within Polish punk, with special attention to those that have continued to perform for several years, impacting the shape of their respective local, or indeed the entire, Polish punk community. The goal of this presentation is to argue for the continuous and urgent need to conduct research into the history of punk in Poland, especially in the form of oral history, as it provides an in-depth and richly detailed view with which written accounts cannot compare.
