ABSTRACT
The article investigates the significance of the Land in Jewish thought and life from the biblical texts to modern Zionism. Ruth Langer describes the yearning for Zion in Jewish liturgy and the role of messianism before discussing the complexities of the Enlightenment for the self-understanding of the people of Israel. The article explores the development of Zionism and provides an overview of the spectrum of voices that shape modern Jewish thinking about Israel.
