ABSTRACT

This chapter explores different methods to engage in systems thinking. In the first case study, a permaculture designer explains how zooming in and out helps him to holistically understand the surrounding landscape and the projects he is working on. The importance of being able to focus on details while not losing sight of the whole is highlighted. Next, the case study of a physician assistant, who also volunteers in health clinics in Africa, showcases how sustainably competent professionals can recognize systemic shortcomings and turn them into sources of vigor. Lastly, the case study of a company owner who transitioned from selling products to delivering services illustrates aspects of life-cycle analysis and the circular economy. At the end of the chapter, readers can find a diagram depicting how the biological and technological cycles interact in the circular economy.
