ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the RESFIA+D framework of Competences for Sustainability for professionals, using the example of Vita the nurse to illustrate several of the seven competences, which focus on humans in their roles as professionals as opposed to civilians or consumers. The acronym RESFIA+D signifies the six general sustainability competences: Responsibility, Emotional intelligence, Systems orientation, Future orientation, Involvement, and Action skills. The seventh competence is the Disciplinary competence, which is directly informed by one’s profession. After a brief overview of these seven competences, the structure of the book’s other chapters is outlined.
