ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book addresses the issue by providing a resource that addresses ‘race’ and racism in an accessible way by contextualizing theory with practical evidence-based examples drawn from global geographical and cultural settings. It highlights clearly from the diverse stories being told, that notions of white supremacy, whiteness, race and racism as well as race logic permeates the spaces in Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic people’s lives. The book shows that the idea of living in a post-racial era is a utopian discourse that has permeated sport and education policy and practices. It provides lived realities of the narrative that ‘race’ and racism are embedded in society and affect all lives in so many different ways. Despite existing evidence there is still a lot of work to be done to address issues of ‘race’, and racism within contemporary societies.
