ABSTRACT
ABSTRACT: Referring to recent history, it is easy to perceive that there is an expansion of urban areas and a need for improved transport infrastructure all over the world. These events have led to congested, unsafe and inefficient vehicle transport networks along urban roads. The situation is worse in the cities of developing countries like India because of the faster growth. The promotion of education, increase in urban population density and change in the lifestyle of city dwellers has paved the way for immediate requirements in extensive expansion of road infrastructures. The extent of transport system expansion depends on the urban form, trend of traffic movements and population. In this paper, an attempt is made to arrive at some conclusion regarding the relationship between the urban area, traffic characteristics and transport infrastructure based on a study conducted in the three major cities in Kerala – Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram and Calicut.
