ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the new phase of the reconstruction and transformation of the communal identity of the Pamiris in Tajikistan. It argues that the historical memory of the Pamiris, as well as the social and political conditions in Soviet Tajikistan, contributed to the construction of a "defensive" communal identity with clearly defined cultural, religious and linguistic boundaries. The chapter discusses the new media created a new space for resistance identities, but also an opportunity for the rise of project identities, which are characterised by conscious activities of individuals and communities who seek to redefine their position in society. It also discusses the new developments in individual and communal self-awareness and self-representation of the Pamiri people of Tajikistan through their engagement with an offspring of the global media – the Social Networking Websites. The chapter provides a starting point for further research on the transformation of the Pamiri community and other parallel Ismaili communities.
