ABSTRACT

Planetary sustainability, understood here according to NASA’s definition of the term, is the idea of sustainable development on a planetary scale, that is, not only with regard to planet Earth but also the surrounding solar system. Recent space activities including space-mining initiatives necessitate the consideration of sustainability on a planetary level, at least economically. Taking this scale into account, Losch discusses how the economic/ecological base dimension of sustainability needs to be extended within this context to incorporate cultural ideas. What about the idea of planetary heritage sites, for instance? In relation to what else does the cultural dimension of sustainability need to be discussed, when thinking on an interplanetary scale? These are some of the questions Losch aims to answer in his contribution.
