ABSTRACT
During the colonial period one had to return to England for theological education or read for orders with a clergyman. At different times in the Eighteenth Century, the College of William and Mary had professors of divinity, but never really developed a theological school. Around 1813 the Fairfield Academy in Herkimer County, New York, operated as a “Divinity School.”
