ABSTRACT

The idea of Self and the authenticity of particular identities have been rapidly dissolving in the acids of post-modern globalising capitalism. For some time the demise of the conventional labour market and employment–as understood throughout the 20th century–has been predicted, as organisations move from jobs to roles and become 'more agile'. This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book finds ways and means of breaking out of the self/employment stranglehold of the "west" and "north" to, thereby, co-evolve the employment of Self and Community, more attuned to the "east" and "south". It shows that a movement is occurring whereby self-employment can, and is being, transformed into communal work that employs the Self in ways that release the authentic vocations of people, individually and collectively.
