ABSTRACT

This chapter explores classroom practice in the early childhood domain and situates that discussion in some of the values, philosophies and practices of the Reggio Emilia educational project. Consistent with Belonging, Being, & Becoming: The Early Years Learning Framework for Australia, the chapter aims "to assist educators to provide young children with opportunities to maximise their potential and develop a foundation for future success in learning". It explores how, once teachers have prepared an environment rich in materials and possibilities, they observe and listen to the children in order to know how to proceed with their work. It provides descriptions and reflections of practice in order that teachers can reflect on these ideas in their own context, keeping in focus always the relationships and learning that are in process locally and through this process consider possible ways to construct change.
