ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses what drama therapy is and how it can be incorporated into team coaching to reinforce new, healthier ways of behaving and thinking within a team. Special emphasis will be placed on how drama therapy can target unconscious group processes, which affect team collaboration and performance negatively. Drama therapy is a systematic psychological method, which uses drama to explore the various challenging circumstances an individual or a group of people are faced with throughout their lives. In a drama therapy session, the body is used as a primary instrument in order to explore the various themes and issues, which concern a team coaching session. Drama therapy helps cultivate creativity. Drama therapy can break through the defence mechanisms that hinder team performance. A simple drama technique can bring to the surface what is not working, and opens the space for fruitful discussions, which can promote learning and positive change.
