ABSTRACT

Several team members reported feelings of confusion and frustration when they did not get a response to some of their email updates. The team started to discuss concrete methods and schedules to improve their cross-cultural awareness and build connections and relationships across the team. With the rise of the global economy, organizations progressively are adopting global virtual teams (GVT) to tap into broader talent pools. This chapter seeks to resolve the often chaotic scenario of coaching GVTs by applying and illustrating the team-level Goal, Reality, Options, Understand Others, and Perform (GROUP) model of coaching. It outlines of the GROUP model and a case study illustrating an example of the challenges GVTs face and what effective coaching of a GVT might look like using the GROUP coaching framework. Team coaching helps to provide a bridge between individuals and the broader system within which they exist and perform to create goal-focused change.
