ABSTRACT

The United Kingdom was among the first of the countries to produce input–output tables and to use them for analytical purposes. Plans for producing a detailed set of input–output tables for 1963 were laid down as soon as the tables for 1954 were completed in 1961. The most up-to-date input–output tables relate to the year 1963 and consist of twenty-eight industry groups. The detailed input–output tables which are being compiled for 1963 consist of about seventy industry and commodity groups. The gradual introduction of a new System of production statistics following the census of production for 1968 will greatly facilitate the calculation of up-dated tables. Input-output analysis is potentially a very powerful tool and, if it is to be exploited to the full, a considerable amount of research and analysis needs to be done. The signs are that the business world is becoming interested in input–output analysis.
