ABSTRACT
This chapter describes how the exploding complexity of the Information Age is transforming hierarchical organisations into flexible networks composed of loosely connected ventures. The result is to transform organisations into automated systems embedded within a turbulent set of economic, social, and political problems. The consequence is that the new domain of economic activity no longer concerns physical tasks involving the manufacture of goods, but the use of sophisticated information systems to manage complex institutional relations. The structural form that is emerging to provide this entrepreneurial capability is the network, primarily because networks offer a higher level of more sophisticated control by which the swelling turbulence of an Information Age can be managed. The growth opportunities in this new domain of the Information Age are virtually limitless, so a rising number of entrepreneurial ventures is underway that is simply the beginning of a huge boom of hi-tech innovation that will sweep through modern economies for decades.
