ABSTRACT

A management consequence of this new era is that information technology (IT) and information systems (IS) should no longer be seen as just a support activity serving management's planning and control needs and automating business operations. Formulation of IT strategies thus would seem to be a key concern and task for senior managements as well as IT executives. Early work in IT strategy formulation has often produced frameworks for analysis. Many of the stunning examples of IT being applied for strategic advantage have arisen in companies and sectors which might be described as 'turnaround' or 'strategic' – but not all. As executives search for IT strategy forrruilation methodologies which provide a substantive and ongoing procedure for both directing the application of IT and gaining strategic advantage from it, a common confusion can be found. Formulating IT strategies is the major concern for many IS executives today as well as for their senior managements.
