ABSTRACT

This chapter summarizes the goals and scope of the book, which works to confirm or refute lore-based technical editing knowledge through empirical research. Technical editing research categories and knowledge gaps are discussed, and questions about editing and editing pedagogy are raised with the goal of motivating other scholars to undertake empirical research in those areas in order to establish best practices. The chapter outlines several ways technical editing courses can be taught and acknowledges various programmatic and pedagogical challenges. The parameters of the editing course itself need to be defined within the context of curricular capacities, students’ learning needs, technology shifts, and the corporate world’s changing needs.
