ABSTRACT

This vignette is concerned with the amount of land that would be necessary for a rural family. This chapter provides all their food needs through a diverse range of cereal, tree and vegetable crops. The vignette also considers the land requirements to provide food and space for small livestock. The chapter discusses of how much land is required as a woodlot to allow a sustainable harvest of building timber and firewood for a family of this size. The family also need a woodlot to provide fodder and mulch, fuel wood and timber, as well as habitat for pest eating species and bees. C. M. Shackleton, along with D. B. K. Dovie and E. T. F. Witkowski, has investigated the quantity of woodland required to provide fuel wood for an African household. The use of grazing land to grow wood supply is a problem in many communities, as cattle and goats impair the productivity of this resource where fuel is concerned.
