ABSTRACT

Nail biopsy is an indispensable tool for the diagnosis of various infectious, inflammatory, and neoplastic disorders of the nail. The potentially scarring nature of the procedure and the possibility of inadequate sampling are two major issues while performing nail biopsies. Thorough understanding of nail anatomy, adequate anesthesia, and hemostasis, proper patient selection and preparation, and correct selection of anatomical site (e.g., nail matrix, nail bed, nail plate, nail fold) are essential components of a successful nail biopsy and have been discussed in detail in this chapter. Also, indications and various techniques of different nail biopsies have been described.
