ABSTRACT

A conservative estimate, considering that not all of the schools were in the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) directory, is that there are more than a hundred Islamic schools. And they will continue to grow in number and size, given continued immigration from Muslim countries, the animated state of Islam, and the leadership being given by ISNA in the organization, promotion and improvement of Islamic full-time schools. There is a new arrival on the scene of religious schooling in America: Islamic "full-time" schools. Schools were subsequently founded by Black Muslim communities in other cities, and by other indigenous Muslim groups, as well as by Muslim immigrants. Although there is no widely used statement of philosophy for Islamic schools, there is agreement on the essential elements. ISNA has estimated that fifty schools in 1988 have grown to more than eighty in 1991, and in 1992 ISNA's revised directory of Islamic organizations listed eighty-seven schools, including twenty-three Sister Clara Muhammad schools.
