ABSTRACT

The management of information technology (IT) is a relatively new function and area of research. However, the author do have a growing body of knowledge based on the experience of, and research into, the management of Data Processing (DP) and computer-based information systems. The chapter describes the nature of the management of information resources. Then some technological trends are identified, followed by presentation of some of the management concerns evident in the survey data. Four interrelated trends in information technology (IT), important in their management implications, seem worthy of emphasis. They both change the nature of many of the planning, organisation and control questions that have faced information managers hitherto and raise new issues are: strategies, user awareness, planning, coping with new ITs and behavioural factors which managements are beginning to recognise. These trends are: IT comprises multiple technologies; IT is dispersing; the rate of IT change is accelerating; and IT is becoming pervasive.
