ABSTRACT
Business tourism plays a key role in the future growth of businesses, cities, and destinations, and wider still as a critical driver of economic growth and GDP. The World Tourism Organization acknowledges that developments in the meetings industry can be an essential driver of a nation’s economy. Conference centres are the main venues used when planning MICE events. Therefore, destinations willing to develop business tourism have undergone the construction of these buildings in their cities. Famous architects such as Santiago Calatrava or Norman Foster are behind some of these infrastructures. However, apart from being modern, innovative, and original from an architectural point of view, these venues must be accessible in order to be enjoyed by all citizens and tourists. This chapter analyses the accessibility of conference centres, in particular the case of the Euskalduna Palace in Bilbao, Spain. It also provides advice on adapting MICE venues in order to make them more inclusive.
